Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Theophilus Evans was a Welsh clergyman and historian. He lived a long time ago, from 1693 to 1767. He is remembered for his writings about the history of Wales and Christianity.

The Life of Theophilus Evans

Theophilus Evans was born in 1693. His family came from a place called Pen-y-wenallt. He was christened in a church in Llandygwydd, which is in Cardiganshire.

He worked as a clergyman in different parts of Wales, including Brecknockshire. He is most famous for his book, Drych y Prif Oesoedd. This title means "Mirror of the Early Centuries." He wrote it in 1716 and updated it in 1740. In this book, he tried to show that Christianity in Britain started on its own.

Evans was a good writer. However, his book mixed real history with old legends. This means some of his stories might not be completely true.

A wealthy man named Sackville Gwynne helped Evans. Later, Sackville's son, Marmaduke Gwynne, also supported him. Theophilus Evans even became Marmaduke's private chaplain. But they eventually went their separate ways. This happened because Marmaduke Gwynne became a supporter of Howell Harris and the Methodist movement.

What Theophilus Evans Wrote

Theophilus Evans wrote several books. Here are two of his most well-known works:

  • Drych y Prif Oesoedd (published in 1716)
  • A History of Modern Enthusiasm (published in 1752)
