Thomas Allin was born in 1838 in a town called Midleton in County Cork, Ireland. He went to Trinity College, Dublin and finished his studies in 1859. After college, he became a priest in the Church of Ireland. He worked in several churches before moving to England in 1877.

Thomas Allin wrote several books during his life. Many of his books focused on his religious beliefs, especially Universalism.

Books on Universalism

  • Universalism Asserted (1885): This was his most famous book. It was first called The Question of Questions. Later, some versions were titled Christ Triumphant or Universalism Asserted. This book explored the idea that God's love will eventually save everyone. Allin became interested in this topic after finding a book on Universalism in the British Library. This led him to study old religious writings.
  • Race and Religion: Hellenistic Theology: its Place in Christian Thought (1899): This book looked at how ancient Greek ideas about religion connected with Christian thought.

Other Important Works

  • The Augustinian Revolution in Theology (1911): This book was published after Allin's death. It discussed how the ideas of an early Christian thinker named Augustine changed religious thought in the Western world.

Botanical Research

Besides his religious writings, Thomas Allin was also a keen naturalist. He studied plants and collaborated with another researcher named Isaac Carroll (1828–1880). Their work led to an important book about the plants of County Cork.
