Thomas Arundell, 2nd Baron Arundell of Wardour was an important English nobleman. He lived from about 1586 to 1643. He was the son of Thomas Arundell, 1st Baron Arundell of Wardour and Lady Mary Wriothesley. He inherited his father's title, becoming the 2nd Baron Arundell of Wardour.

Life of Thomas Arundell

Thomas Arundell became the 2nd Baron Arundell of Wardour in Wiltshire on November 7, 1639. He was a very loyal supporter of the King during the English Civil War. This was a big conflict in England between those who supported the King (called Royalists) and those who supported Parliament (called Parliamentarians).

Role in the English Civil War

Thomas Arundell actively joined the Royalist side. He even created his own group of soldiers, known as a Regiment of Horse, to fight for the King. He was part of an important battle called the Battle of Stratton. This battle took place on May 16, 1643, and the Royalists won.

His Final Days

Sadly, Thomas Arundell was badly hurt during the Battle of Stratton. He died three days later, on May 19, 1643, in Oxford, from his injuries.

His home, Wardour Castle in Wiltshire, was also involved in the war. He had to leave its defense to his wife, Lady Blanche Arundell. The castle was captured by the Parliamentarians on May 8, 1643, shortly before his death. Thomas Arundell was buried in Tisbury, Wiltshire.

Family Life

On May 11, 1607, Thomas Arundell married Lady Blanche Somerset. She was born around 1583 or 1584 and passed away on October 28, 1649. Blanche was the daughter of Edward Somerset, the 4th Earl of Worcester.

Their Children

Thomas and Blanche had three children together:

  • Henry Arundell, 3rd Baron Arundell of Wardour (1607–1694), who became the next Baron after his father.
  • Anne Arundell, who married Roger Vaughan.
  • Katherine Arundell (born around 1614), who married Francis Cornwallis. He was the son of Sir Charles Cornwallis.
