Thomas Brugge, 5th Baron Chandos facts for kids
Thomas Brugge (born in 1427 and died on January 30, 1493) was an important English nobleman. He was officially known as the 5th Baron Chandos.
Who Was Thomas Brugge?
Thomas Brugge was born in a place called Coberley in Gloucestershire, England. His father was Giles Brugge, who was the 4th Baron Chandos. His mother was Catherine Clifford. Catherine was the daughter of James Clifford from Frampton-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. She had also been married before to Anselm Guise.
His Work and Titles
Thomas Brugge was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Gloucestershire in 1460. This meant he was chosen to represent the people of Gloucestershire in the English Parliament. Later, in 1472, he was an MP for Herefordshire.
When his father passed away on April 13, 1467, Thomas became the 5th Lord Chandos. This was a noble title he inherited.
His Family and Children
Thomas Brugge was married twice. His first wife was Margaret Banaster, but they did not have any children together.
In 1458, he married Florence. She was the daughter of William Darrell of Littlecote House in Wiltshire. Florence's mother was Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Calston. Thomas and Florence had at least eight children:
- Elizabeth Brugge (born around 1459 – died January 26, 1535). She married William Cassey first, and then Walter Rowdon. There is a special metal plaque in Eldersfield church to remember her.
- Alice Brugge (born around 1460). She married Thomas William Chicheley.
- Giles Brugge, 6th Baron Chandos (born around 1462 or 1463 – died December 1, 1511). He became the 6th Baron Chandos after his father. He married Isabel Baynham.
- Eleanor Brugge (born around 1463). She was the third wife of Thomas Pauncefoot.
- Jane Brugge (born around 1466).
- Henry Brugge (born around 1470). He was a gentleman from Newbury, Berkshire. He also served King Henry VIII. Henry was an MP for Ludgershall, Wiltshire. He married Margery Buckerd around 1500. Margery was the daughter of William Buckerd. Henry was also the High Sheriff of Berkshire in 1520 and 1530. His son was Sir Richard Brydges.
- Thomas Brugge (born around 1471 – died 1511). He had a daughter named Isabelle Bridges. She married Peter Gooch in 1522.
- Anne Brugge (born around 1473). She married William Reade first, and then Henry Pole. Anne and William had a son named William Reade.
