Thomas Butler, 1st Baron Cahir facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Butler, also known as the 1st Baron Cahir, was an important Irish nobleman who lived a long time ago. He was born into a powerful family called the Butler dynasty. He died in the year 1558.

A Nobleman's Story

Thomas Butler was the son of Catherine Power and Edmund Butler. His family had a long history, tracing back to a person named James "Gallda" Butler.

On November 10, 1543, Thomas Butler became a special kind of nobleman. He was given the title of Baron of Caher. Being a "Baron" meant he was a very important person in Ireland.

He married Eleanor Butler. She was the fifth daughter of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond, another powerful leader. Thomas lived in the famous Cahir Castle. From there, he was in charge of a large area called the barony of Iffa and Offa West.

Thomas Butler passed away in 1558. His only son, Edmund Butler, 2nd Baron Cahir, took over his title. However, Edmund died just two years later. Since Thomas had no other sons to inherit the title, it ended for a short time. But it was later given to his cousin, Theobald Butler, 1st Baron Cahir (of the second creation).
