Thomas Clinton was an important English nobleman who lived a long time ago. He was known as the 3rd Earl of Lincoln. From 1585 to 1616, people called him Lord Clinton.
Thomas Clinton's Life and Work
Thomas Clinton studied at Oxford University. He earned a special degree there in 1588. He became a representative in the English Parliament. In 1601, he represented Lincolnshire. From 1604 to 1610, he represented Great Grimsby.
Lord Clinton was part of the Lower House of Parliament. In 1604, he joined a special group called the Union Commission. This group worked on bringing England and Scotland closer together. Later, on February 14, 1610, he joined the House of Lords. This was the upper part of Parliament. He became Baron Clinton at that time.
Lord Lincoln passed away in a place called Tattershall.
Thomas Clinton's Family
Thomas Clinton was the oldest son of Henry Clinton, 2nd Earl of Lincoln. His mother was Lady Catherine Hastings. She was the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Huntingdon. When his father passed away in 1616, Thomas inherited the family titles.
In 1584, Thomas Clinton married Elizabeth Knyvett. She passed away in 1632. They had many children together:
- Theophilus Clinton, 4th Earl of Lincoln, who became the 4th Earl of Lincoln. He was born in 1599 and passed away in 1667. He married Bridget Fiennes first, and then Elizabeth Gorges.
- Edward Clinton, Baron Clinton, Theophilus's son, was born in 1624. He married Lady Anne Holles.
- Edward Clinton, 5th Earl of Lincoln, Edward's son, was born in 1645. He became the 5th Earl of Lincoln. He passed away in France in 1692. He married Jeanne de Gallières. When he passed away without children, the title of Baron Clinton became uncertain for a while.
- Edward Clinton, Baron Clinton, Theophilus's son, was born in 1624. He married Lady Anne Holles.
- Lady Katherine Clinton, who married George Booth.
- Lady Arabella Clinton, who married Robert Rolle.
- Lady Margaret Clinton, who married Hugh Boscawen.
- Lady Arbella Clinton, who was born in 1597. She moved to America and passed away in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1630. She married Isaac Johnson.
