Thomas Clutterbuck PC (born 1697 – died 23 November 1742) was an important British politician. He served in the British House of Commons, which is like the main law-making group in Britain, from 1722 to 1742. He was also a member of the Parliament of Ireland from 1725 to 1742.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Clutterbuck was born in 1697. He was the oldest son of Thomas Clutterbuck from Ingatestone, Essex. His mother was Bridgett Exton. Her father was Sir Thomas Exton, who was a lawyer.

When Thomas was 16, he started studying at Christ Church, Oxford University in 1713. He also joined Middle Temple in 1713. Middle Temple is one of the places in London where people learn to become lawyers.

In 1731, Thomas Clutterbuck married Henrietta Cuffe Tollemache. Her father was Lord Huntingtower.

Political Career

Thomas Clutterbuck had a long and active career in politics. He held several important roles.

Member of Parliament

Thomas Clutterbuck became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the first time in 1722. He represented the area of Liskeard. He was re-elected for Liskeard in 1727.

Later, in 1734, he was elected as an MP for Plympton Erle. He was elected again for this area in 1741. Being an MP meant he helped make laws and decisions for the country.

Roles in Government

From 1724 to 1730, Thomas Clutterbuck worked as the Chief Secretary for Ireland. This was a very important job. He helped Lord Carteret, who was the King's main representative in Ireland. During this time, he was also an MP for Lisburn in the Parliament of Ireland.

He also served as a Lord of the Admiralty from 1732 to 1741. The Admiralty was in charge of the Royal Navy, which is Britain's navy. This role meant he helped manage the navy.

In 1741, he became a Lord of the Treasury. This meant he helped manage the country's money. In 1742, he was made the Treasurer of the Navy. This was a top job for handling the navy's finances.

On 24 June 1742, Thomas Clutterbuck was made a Privy Councillor. This is a special group of advisors to the King.

Later Life and Death

Thomas Clutterbuck passed away on 23 November 1742. He had one son and three daughters.
