Thomas Cochrane, 6th Earl of Dundonald (born 1702 – died 28 May 1737) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the title of Earl of Dundonald.
Early Life of Thomas Cochrane
Thomas Cochrane was born in Scotland in 1702. He was the only son of William Cochrane, who was a Member of Parliament (MP). His mother was Lady Grizel Graham.
His family had important connections. His grandfathers included William Cochrane, Lord Cochrane, and James Graham, the 2nd Marquess of Montrose.
Becoming an Earl
In 1725, Thomas Cochrane's cousin, William Cochrane, the 5th Earl of Dundonald, passed away. Since his cousin had no children, Thomas inherited the title. This made him the 6th Earl of Dundonald.
Family Life
In October 1727, Lord Dundonald married Catherine Hamilton. She was the daughter of Lord Basil Hamilton. Together, they had four children:
- William Cochrane, 7th Earl of Dundonald (1729–1758). He was killed during a battle called the Siege of Louisbourg.
- Hon. Basil Cochrane (died 1748). He served in the Royal Navy.
- Lady Katherine Cochrane (died 1776). She married William Wood.
- Lady Charlotte Cochrane (died 1740).
Lord Dundonald died at Paisley Abbey on 28 May 1737. His oldest son, William, became the next Earl. His wife, Catherine, passed away in 1779. When William, the 7th Earl, died without children in 1758, the title went to his second cousin, Thomas Cochrane.
