Thomas Crosby (1683–1751) was an English writer. He is best known for writing a book about the history of English Baptists.
Early Life and Career
Thomas Crosby was born in London in 1683. When he was young, he worked as a sailor. He also studied at the Royal Mathematical School. This school taught subjects like math and navigation.
Crosby became a member of the Baptist church. He joined the Horselydown church in Southwark, London. From 1710, he ran a school there for 40 years. His school taught math and business skills. He also had a business with John Robinson. They sold tools, globes, and books. Crosby married the daughter of Benjamin Keach, a well-known Baptist leader.
Crosby was involved in the church community. He supported John Gill to become a new pastor. Later, Crosby had disagreements with his church. He left and joined another group called the Unicorn Yard congregation. However, he also left that group after a while.
His Writings
Thomas Crosby wrote several important books. His most famous work is History of the English Baptists. This book was published in four parts between 1738 and 1740. It tells the story of Baptist ministers from the time of the Reformation. The book helped people learn about the history of this religious group.
Crosby also wrote other books. In 1738, he wrote A Brief Reply to Mr. John Lewis's History. This book was a response to another historian, John Lewis. Crosby also helped Daniel Neal with information for his book, History of the Puritans.
Besides history, Crosby wrote practical guides. In 1719, he published The London Practice. This book was a guide for merchants. In 1751, he wrote Mariner's Guide. This book was a complete guide to navigation for sailors. In 1749, his book The Book-keeper's Guide was published. It helped people learn about managing accounts.
