Sir Thomas Danby (born 1610 – died 5 August 1660) was an important person from England's past. He owned a lot of land and was a politician. This means he was involved in the government. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament. Sir Thomas Danby lived during a time when England was having a big conflict called the English Civil War. He supported the King's side, known as the Royalists.

About Sir Thomas Danby

Sir Thomas Danby was the son of Christopher Danby and Frances Parker. His family owned a lot of land. He had ten large estates, called manors, and more than 2,000 acres of land. This land even included coal mines, which were very valuable.

His Early Career

In 1637, Sir Thomas Danby held an important job called High Sheriff of Yorkshire. This role meant he was the chief law enforcement officer in Yorkshire. He was also given the title of "Sir" when he was knighted on 25 July 1633. Being knighted was a special honor given by the King.

His Time in Parliament

In November 1640, Sir Thomas Danby was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Richmond, Yorkshire. He served in a special Parliament known as the Long Parliament. During this time, he continued to show his strong support for the King. Because he supported the King's side in the English Civil War, he was removed from Parliament in September 1642. He also had to pay a very large fine of £4,780 because of his loyalty to the King.

Family and Legacy

Sir Thomas Danby passed away in London on 5 August 1660. He was buried in York Minster, a famous church in England.

He was married to Katherine Wandesford. She was the daughter of Christopher Wandesford, who was a very important official in Ireland. Katherine passed away in 1645. Sir Thomas and Katherine had many children, sixteen in total! Ten of their children, eight boys and two girls, lived past infancy. One of their sons, also named Thomas Danby (1631–1667), became the very first Mayor of the city of Leeds.
