Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Thomas Freke (born September 27, 1563 – died May 5, 1633) was an important English businessman and politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, at different times between 1584 and 1626.

Who Was Sir Thomas Freke?

Sir Thomas Freke was born into a well-known family. His father, Robert Freke, worked for the government as a "teller of the Exchequer," which meant he handled money for the King. Robert was also a "surveyor" for the area of Dorset.

Thomas was the oldest son. He followed in his father's footsteps, becoming involved in public service and business.

Early Life and Family

Thomas Freke's mother was Alice Swayne. His family lived in a place called Iwerne Courtney. In 1592, when his father passed away, Thomas took over the family's responsibilities. He also became a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Dorset. A J.P. helps keep law and order in a local area.

Thomas Freke married Elizabeth Taylor. Together, they had a large family with seven sons and five daughters. His wife, Elizabeth, passed away in 1640. One of their sons, John Freke, also became a Member of Parliament, just like his father. Their daughter Alice married Sir George Hastings, who was also a politician.

A Career in Politics

Sir Thomas Freke had a long and active career in English politics. In 1584, he was first chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Dorchester. This meant he represented the people of Dorchester in the House of Commons.

He was also chosen to be the High Sheriff of Dorset twice, first from 1597 to 1598, and again from 1611 to 1612. The High Sheriff was a very important official in the county, responsible for enforcing laws and keeping the peace.

Important Roles and Honors

In 1603, Thomas Freke was given the special honor of being "knighted." This meant he was given the title "Sir" before his name, recognizing his service to the country.

For about 30 years, he served as a Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset. This role involved helping the main Lieutenant of the county with military and administrative duties. He was a highly respected person in Dorset.

Business and Exploration

Sir Thomas Freke was also a "merchant adventurer." This meant he was involved in trade and business ventures, often by sea, which could be risky but also very profitable. He and his son owned a ship called 'Leopold' of Weymouth. This ship was one of the largest "privateers" from Dorset. A privateer was a private ship that was allowed by the government to attack enemy ships during wartime.

In 1607, he became a member of the King's council for Virginia. This council helped manage the new English colonies being set up in America. In 1612, he joined the council for the Virginia Company, which was a company set up to establish and support the colonies in Virginia.

Sir Thomas Freke was elected as a Member of Parliament for Dorset twice more, first in 1604 and again in 1626. He passed away on May 5, 1633, leaving behind a legacy of public service and business success.
