Thomas Henry Sage was a brave English soldier. He received the Victoria Cross (VC), which is the highest award for bravery in battle given to British and Commonwealth soldiers. Thomas Sage was born in Tiverton, Devon on December 8, 1882. He lived there for most of his life.

Who Was Thomas Henry Sage?

Thomas Sage joined the British Army and served during World War I. He was a Private in the 8th Battalion of The Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's). When he performed his heroic act, he was 34 years old.

Sage's Quick Thinking

Thomas Sage acted incredibly fast. Without thinking about his own safety, he immediately threw himself onto the grenade. This brave act covered the grenade and stopped it from harming his comrades. He saved the lives of several of his fellow soldiers.

The Cost of Courage

Even though he saved others, Private Sage was badly wounded by the explosion. His quick thinking and self-sacrifice showed immense courage. Because of this extraordinary act, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Later Life and Legacy

After his military service, Thomas Sage returned to his hometown of Tiverton. He passed away on July 20, 1945, at the age of 62. He was buried in Tiverton Cemetery.
