The Ven. Thomas Hooton Michael Dix (1908-1985) was an important church leader and missionary. He served as the Archdeacon of Zanzibar and the main priest at Christ Church Cathedral, Zanzibar from 1954 to 1959. Later, he was honored as a Canon at St Albans Cathedral in England.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Hooton Michael Dix was born on April 7, 1908. He grew up in Harrold, Bedfordshire, England. He went to Bedford Modern School from 1920 to 1926. Thomas was very good at playing the organ and often won awards at music festivals.

After school, he studied at King’s College, London. He also became a school teacher in Hendon. In 1934, he earned a special diploma in organ playing from the Royal College of Organists. Later, he returned to King’s College, London to study theology, which is the study of religious faith. In 1940, he attended the Bishops’ College, Cheshunt.

Becoming a Priest and Missionary

After his studies, Thomas Dix became a curate, which is a priest's assistant, at St Saviour’s church in St Albans. He was ordained as a deacon in 1940 and as a full priest in 1941.

In 1943, Thomas joined the Universities' Mission to Central Africa. This group sent him to the Zanzibar Diocese. He worked there as a priest in Msalabani from 1944 to 1951. Then, he served as a missionary in Tanga from 1951 to 1954.

Leading the Church in Zanzibar

In 1954, Thomas Dix was given a big role. He became the Archdeacon of Zanzibar. An archdeacon is a senior church official who helps a bishop. He was also the main priest in charge of Christ Church Cathedral, Zanzibar.

During his time in Zanzibar, he led a special church service. This service was for Princess Margaret, the sister of Queen Elizabeth II. She visited Zanzibar on October 7, 1956. Thomas Dix served in Zanzibar until 1959.

Later Years and Honors

After his time in Zanzibar, Thomas Dix returned to England. He became the Vicar of Harrold, Bedfordshire from 1959 to 1963. A vicar is a priest in charge of a parish. He also helped out in nearby churches. From 1962 to 1963, he was a Rural Dean of Felmersham. A Rural Dean oversees a group of parishes.

In 1963, he became the Vicar of Flamstead in Hertfordshire. He held this position until 1974. In 1970, he received a special honor. He was named an Honorary Canon of St Albans Cathedral. A Canon is a member of the clergy who works at a cathedral. In 1974, he became a Canon (Emeritus), meaning he was still recognized for his service. Thomas Hooton Michael Dix passed away in 1985 in Hove, West Sussex.
