Early Life and Family
Thomas Hutchison was born on December 16, 1866, at Carlowrie House. His father was Robert Hutchison of Carlowrie, and his mother was Mary Jemima Tait. Thomas had a younger brother, Robert Hutchison, who became a famous doctor. Their uncle, also named Thomas Hutchison, had been the Provost of Leith and was the one who first built Carlowrie.
Becoming Lord Provost
In 1921, Sir Thomas Hutchison took over the role of Lord Provost of Edinburgh from John William Chesser. He served for two years, helping to lead the city. After his term ended in 1923, William Lowrie Sleigh became the next Lord Provost.
His Homes
Sir Thomas had a home in Edinburgh at 28 Royal Terrace, which is near Calton Hill. He also inherited the family's large country home, Carlowrie Castle, which is close to Kirkliston.
Sir Thomas Hutchison passed away on April 12, 1925. He is buried with his wife in Dean Cemetery in western Edinburgh. Their grave can be found on the south path, near the main entrance.
