His mother was Alice, who was the daughter of William Ferrers. When Thomas was christened, important people like the Earl of Suffolk, the Earl of Somerset, and the Countess of Nottingham were there. Even King James attended the celebration!

Political Career

Sir Thomas Ingram had an active career in politics. In 1640, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for a place called Thirsk. This was during a time known as the Long Parliament.

During the English Civil War

When the English Civil War began, Sir Thomas Ingram supported King Charles I. In 1642, he was a "commissioner of array" for the King in Yorkshire. This meant he helped gather support and resources for the King's army. Because he supported the King, he was removed from Parliament on September 2, 1642. After the war, in 1649, he had to pay a large fine because of his support for the Royalists.

After the King's Return

Before King Charles II returned to the throne in 1660 (an event called the Restoration), Sir Thomas Ingram sent money to the King's court, which was in exile. He also helped talk with important people to prepare for the King's return.

Once the King was back, Ingram received many important roles:

  • In June 1660, he became a "gentleman of the privy chamber," which was a position close to the King.
  • In July 1660, he became a J.P. for Middlesex. A J.P. helps keep law and order in an area.
  • He also served as a Deputy Lieutenant for North Yorkshire and Middlesex, helping with local government and defense.
  • From 1660 to 1668, he was a "commissioner for trade," meaning he helped manage trade for the country.
  • In 1661, he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for Thirsk in a new Parliament called the Cavalier Parliament.
  • He held many other roles, including helping with taxes, managing corporations, and overseeing roads and sewers in London.

In 1664, Sir Thomas Ingram became the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and a Privy Councilor. These were very important positions, and he held them until he passed away.
