Thomas J. Samuelian is an American-Armenian expert in languages. He is a linguist, which means he studies how languages work. He has written many books and articles about the Armenian language, its stories, and its past.
Thomas Samuelian's Career
Thomas Samuelian studied at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his first two degrees there. In 1977, he received a special scholarship. He then earned his PhD in linguistics from the same university in 1978. A PhD is the highest university degree you can get.
During the 1980s, Samuelian taught at several universities. These included the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. He also taught at St. Nersess Armenian Seminary.
In 1991, he earned another degree, a JD, from Harvard Law School. A JD is a law degree.
In 1998, he joined the American University of Armenia. He became a professor there. Later, he was the Dean of the LLM program. He also served as Dean of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. He retired from the university in 2017.
In 2006, he received an important award. It was called the Order of Saint Sahak and Saint Mesrop. This award was given by Karekin II, the head of the Armenian Church.
He also helped start the Arak-29 Foundation. This group helps share Armenian history, language, and culture. He often translates things and adds content to their website.
