Early Life and Career
Thomas Moseley was born in 1539. He grew up in North Castle Grange, which is near a place called Cawthorne. Sadly, Thomas lost his father when he was still very young. After this, he went to live with John Beane. John Beane was a respected leader in York. He was an "alderman," which meant he was a senior member of the city council. John Beane was also a Member of Parliament, just like Thomas would become later.
Learning the Ropes
Thomas learned a lot about business. He completed an "apprenticeship" with his uncle. This is like a long training program where you learn a skill or trade. After his training, Thomas traveled to Hamburg. This was part of his work with a "merchant's company." Merchants were people who bought and sold goods, often traveling to different places to trade.
Becoming a City Leader
Even though he faced some money problems, Thomas was still chosen as an alderman for the Walmgate area of York. This shows that people in the city trusted him.
Political Journey
Thomas Moseley wanted to be a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone who represents their city or area in the country's government.
First Attempts to Join Parliament
In 1593, Thomas tried to get elected to Parliament. He received a lot of votes, coming in second place. However, the city's main council, called the "assembly," decided not to let him join.
Success in 1597
Later, the rules for elections changed. These changes helped Thomas. In 1597, he was successfully elected to Parliament. He became an MP for York.
Work in Parliament
While in Parliament, Thomas Moseley was very busy. We don't have records of him giving speeches. However, he worked on many important committees. These committees focused on issues related to merchants and trade. This was a natural fit for him, given his background in business.
Family Life
Thomas Moseley married a woman named Jane. She was the youngest daughter of John Wormeley, who lived in Hatfield.
Children and Marriage
Thomas and Jane had at least one daughter, who was also named Jane. Their daughter Jane married Robert Sowtheby (also known as Sotheby). Their wedding took place at St John's Church in York on August 7, 1621.
