Thomas Nicholson was the son of Jean Napier and Sir Thomas Nicolson, 3rd Baronet of Carnock. His mother, Jean Napier, was the sister of Archibald Napier, 3rd Lord Napier. This family connection was very important for his future titles.

How Thomas Inherited His Titles

When his father, Sir Thomas Nicolson, died in 1670, Thomas inherited the title of Baronet of Carnock. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Later, in 1683, his uncle, the 3rd Lord Napier, passed away. Because his mother was the uncle's sister, Thomas then inherited the title of Lord Napier. A Lord is a high-ranking nobleman in Scotland.
