Margaret Brisbane, 5th Lady Napier facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Margaret Brisbane, 5th Lady Napier (who passed away in 1706), was an important Scottish noblewoman. She held a special title in Scotland called a "peerage."

Who Was Margaret Brisbane?

Margaret Brisbane was born into the famous Napier family, known as Clan Napier, from a place called Merchiston in Scotland. Her maiden name was Napier. She was the great-granddaughter of John Napier, a very clever person who invented something important in math called logarithms.

Her father was Archibald Napier, 2nd Lord Napier. Her mother was Lady Elizabeth Erskine. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Erskine, 19th Earl of Mar.

How She Became Lady Napier

The title of "Lord Napier" was usually passed down through the family. Margaret's older brother, Archibald Napier, 3rd Lord Napier, held the title before her. When he passed away, the title went to her sister Jean's son, Thomas Nicolson, 4th Lord Napier.

However, Thomas Nicolson never married and did not have any children. So, when he died, the special title of "Lord Napier" then passed to Margaret. This made her the 5th person to hold this important family title.

Her Own Family

Margaret Brisbane married a man named John Brisbane. He worked for the government as the Secretary to the Admiralty during the time of King Charles II.

Margaret and John had a daughter named Elizabeth Napier. Elizabeth also had an important title: Mistress of Napier. Elizabeth later married Sir William Scott, 2nd Baronet of Thirlestane.

When Margaret Brisbane passed away in 1706, her grandson, Francis Napier, 6th Lord Napier, inherited the title. He was only four years old at the time.
