Early Life and Education
Thomas Platts-Mills studied at several well-known universities. He attended University College London and then Balliol College, Oxford. He also studied at St. Thomas' Hospital Medical School.
He earned his PhD from London University. Later, he completed a special research program at Johns Hopkins University. There, he worked with a famous scientist named Kimishige Ishizaka. In 1971, he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians.
Career and Leadership
From 1975 to 1982, Thomas Platts-Mills worked in Britain. He was part of the Medical Research Council. This group helps fund important medical research.
In 1982, he moved to the University of Virginia in the United States. He became a professor there, teaching medicine and microbiology. Since 1993, he has been the head of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. This means he leads all the research and work related to allergies and the immune system at the university.

He also helped create tests to find dust mite allergens. His research showed that it's the tiny particles from mite droppings that people breathe in, causing allergies.
Other Allergens
Dr. Platts-Mills has also studied how our bodies react to many other allergens. These include allergens from pollens, which cause hay fever. He also researched allergens from a fungus called Trichophyton. This fungus can cause skin infections.

Mammalian Meat Allergy
Dr. Platts-Mills is famous for discovering the mammalian meat allergy. This is an allergy to red meat, like beef or pork. In 2002, he found a link between this allergy and bites from the Lone Star tick.
He discovered that a sugar molecule called alpha-gal causes this allergy. When a Lone Star tick bites someone, it can transfer alpha-gal into their body. This can make the person's immune system react to alpha-gal found in red meat. This discovery was a big step in understanding this unusual allergy.
