Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Stephens Davies (1795–1851) was an important British mathematician. He was a member of famous scientific groups like the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Who Was Thomas Davies?

Thomas Stephens Davies was born on January 1, 1795. He grew up to become a very skilled mathematician. He was known for sharing his ideas and discoveries with others through various publications.

Early Work and Recognition

Davies began sharing his mathematical writings in magazines and journals when he was still quite young. His first articles appeared in publications like the Leeds Correspondent in 1817. He wrote for many different magazines, including the Philosophical Magazine.

His hard work and talent were recognized by important groups. In 1831, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a special honor for scientists and thinkers in Scotland. Later, in 1833, he was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in London, which is one of the oldest and most respected scientific organizations in the world. He also became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1840, showing his interest in history and old things.

Teaching and New Ideas

In 1834, Davies became a math teacher at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. Here, he taught future military leaders about mathematics.

He studied many different areas of geometry. Some of his interests included:

  • The properties of shapes like the trapezium.
  • Ideas from famous mathematicians like Pascal's hexagramme mystique.
  • The geometry of three-dimensional shapes.

One of his most important contributions was his new system of spherical geometry. This is a special type of geometry used for curved surfaces, like the surface of a globe. His work in this area helped keep his name known among mathematicians.

A Look at Early Bicycles

Interestingly, Thomas Davies also wrote about "velocipedes" in 1837. These were very early versions of bicycles, sometimes called "hobby-horses." His writings give us a glimpse into how these early bikes were used and how they became popular for a short time. It seems he might have even ridden one himself!

Thomas Stephens Davies passed away on January 6, 1851, after being ill for six years. He was 56 years old.
