Thomas Francis Wenman (born 18 November 1745 – died 8 April 1796) was a British professor, a person who studied nature, and someone who loved old things and history. He was also a special member of the Royal Society, a famous group for scientists.

Thomas Wenman's Early Life and Education

Thomas Francis Wenman was born in 1745 at Thame Park, a place near Thame in Oxfordshire, England. He was the second son of Philip Wenman, who was the 6th Viscount Wenman, and his mother Sophia.

When he was older, Thomas went to University College, Oxford, in 1762 to start his studies. In 1764, he began studying law at a well-known law school called the Inner Temple.

A Career in Law and Politics

While he was still studying law, Thomas Wenman became a fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, in 1765. This meant he was a special member of the college. By 1770, he had finished his law studies and became a lawyer. He also earned special degrees in civil law from Oxford in 1771 and 1780.

In 1774, Thomas tried to become a Member of Parliament for a place called Wallingford, but he didn't win. However, he was then elected to represent Westbury in the House of Commons. He served in Parliament until 1780, helping to make laws for Britain.

A Love for Nature and History

Thomas Wenman was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1779. This was a big honor for someone interested in science. Because he loved old things and history, he was chosen to be the Keeper of the Archives at Oxford University in 1781. This important job meant he looked after all the university's old records and documents. He also became a deputy leader for the university that same year.

In 1789, he became a professor of civil law at Oxford University. But Thomas was most interested in studying nature and plants. He loved to collect different plant samples.

His Legacy

Sadly, while he was out collecting specimens near Water Eaton, Thomas Wenman accidentally fell into the River Cherwell. He drowned on April 8, 1796. He was buried in the chapel at All Souls College on April 15, 1796.
