Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Wenman (born around 1548 – died 23 July 1577), also known as Waynman or Weynman, was an English gentleman who lived in the countryside. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for a short time, representing the area of Buckingham. An MP is a person chosen by voters to represent them in the House of Commons, which is a part of the country's government.

Early Life and Family

Thomas Wenman was the oldest son of Sir Richard Wenman. His father was a wealthy landowner in Buckinghamshire. Thomas's mother was Isabel, who was the daughter of John Williams, 1st Baron Williams of Thame. When Isabel's father passed away in 1559, she inherited a large estate called the manor of Thame.

Member of Parliament and Inheritance

Thomas Wenman served as a Member of Parliament for Buckingham in the year 1571. This was a brief period in his life.

In 1573, his father died, and Thomas inherited many properties. These included estates in places like Twyford, Beaconsfield, Amersham, Penn, and the Chalfonts, all in Buckinghamshire. He also inherited the manor of Eaton.

Marriage and Later Life

On 9 June 1572, Thomas Wenman married Jane West. She was the daughter of William West, 1st Baron De La Warr. They were married in London.

Over the next five years, Thomas and Jane had three sons and one daughter. Thomas Wenman passed away at Twyford on 23 July 1577. He might have died from a serious illness that was common at the time. He was buried in the church at Twyford, where there is a special monument in his memory.

After Thomas's death, his family faced some challenges. He had borrowed a lot of money, and some of his land had to be sold to pay off these debts.

His Son and Family After Thomas

When Thomas Wenman died, his oldest son and heir, Richard Wenman, was only four years old. Because Richard was so young, the Court of Wards and Liveries looked after him. They placed him under the care of his mother, Jane Wenman, and the Earl of Leicester.

Later, Jane Wenman married two more times. Her second husband was James Cressy, and her third was Thomas Tasburgh. Her fourth marriage was to Ralph Sheldon.

In 1628, Thomas's son, Richard Wenman, was given the special title of Viscount Wenman.
