Thomas Wylde facts for kids
Thomas Wylde (born around 1670 – died April 12, 1740) was an important English politician and administrator. He lived at a famous place called The Commandery in Worcester.
Thomas was the oldest son of Robert Wylde (who lived from about 1622 to 1689) and his wife Elizabeth. Robert also lived at The Commandery. Thomas married Katherine in 1696. She was the daughter of Sir Baynham Throckmorton. Thomas and Katherine had a son named Robert Wylde (who died in 1752). This Robert later became a director of the South Sea Company, a very important trading company at the time.
In 1720, after Katherine passed away, Thomas married Anne. Anne was the widow of Charles Dowdeswell, who had been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Tewkesbury.
Thomas Wylde's Political Career
Thomas Wylde became a politician thanks to a relative named Edmund Wylde. Edmund left Thomas a lot of land, including estates in Glazeley, Shropshire. Having this land helped Thomas afford a career in politics.
Serving in Parliament
Thomas Wylde was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Worcester. He served in Parliament for a long time, in nine different sessions, from 1701 to 1727. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's main law-making body.
After 1727, Thomas became a commissioner of the excise for Ireland. This meant he helped collect taxes on certain goods in Ireland. He took this job because it was very expensive to run for re-election to Parliament.
Thomas Wylde's Family and Legacy
Thomas Wylde spent a lot of his money on elections to become an MP. His son, Robert, took over the family's affairs after him. Robert married a daughter of Charles Dowdeswell.
Robert and his wife had a son named Thomas Wylde. This Thomas had two wives. With his first wife, he had a son named Thomas Rous Wylde. With his second wife, Elizabeth, he had another son named Ralph Browne Wylde. Ralph Browne Wylde later changed his last name to Browne. His family continued to live in the area.
Another of Robert Wylde's sons, Charles, also had children. His family line continued through his son, Robert Wylde, who became a vicar (a type of church leader).
