The Thompson–Fasbender House is a special old building in Hastings, Minnesota. You can find it at 649 West 4th Street. This house is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built a long time ago in 1880.
A Home with History
The house was built by a man named William Thompson. He moved to Minnesota in 1857 from Maine. Mr. Thompson was a busy person. He worked as a banker and bought wheat. He also owned a lot of land. Plus, he was part-owner of a sawmill and a factory that made doors and window frames. Because he knew many skilled woodworkers, his house has beautiful wooden details.
A Unique Style
The Thompson-Fasbender House has a special look called Second Empire architecture. This style was popular a long time ago. One key feature is its unique roof, called a mansard roof. This roof has a special shape with slopes on all sides. It's covered with decorative wooden shingles that look like fish scales. The house also has fancy brackets under the roof edges, which add to its grand appearance.
From Home to Hospital
Many years later, in 1929, a doctor named Herman Fasbender, Sr. bought the house. He had a big idea for it. He turned the house into a hospital called Saint Raphael Hospital. Before this, the hospital was in another building nearby, the VanDyke-Libby House.
A New Purpose
Saint Raphael Hospital helped many people for years. But in 1953, a new hospital opened in Hastings. It was called Regina Memorial Hospital. When the new hospital opened, Saint Raphael Hospital closed its doors. The Thompson-Fasbender House then changed again. It became a building with many apartments for people to live in. Dr. Fasbender moved his medical office to a different building, the Fasbender Clinic.
Today's House
Now, the Thompson-Fasbender House has a new life once more. It is no longer a hospital or apartments. Today, it is a bed and breakfast inn. This means people can stay there overnight, like a hotel, and enjoy breakfast in the morning. It's a great way for visitors to experience a piece of Hastings' history.
