Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thorn Creek Woods Nature Center and Preserve is a cool place in Will County, Illinois, close to the town of Park Forest, Illinois. It's part of the Forest Preserve District of Will County, which helps protect nature areas.

You can find the entrance to Thorn Creek Woods Nature Preserve at 247 Monee Road. It's about 0.25 miles (0.40 km) north of Stunkel Road in Park Forest. The preserve is open every day from 8:00 a.m. until sunset. The Nature Center, which is a building, is open from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

This amazing preserve covers about 830 acres (3.4 km2)! It's where Thorn Creek starts. You'll find different types of land here, like low-lying areas called bottomlands, deep valleys known as ravines, and forests filled with white-oak trees. There are also wet areas called marshes and open grassy fields called meadows.

The Nature Center itself is inside an old church building right off Monee Road. It has two floors and includes a nature library where you can learn more, plus cool exhibits about local wildlife and plants. The main trail begins behind the church and leads you east into the woods.

The land here changes a lot! The trail starts on high ground, then goes down into the Thorn Creek River Valley. You'll cross the creek and then climb back up and out of the valley. The area near the river and its smaller streams can be quite rugged because they've carved out many deep cuts and ravines over time.
