Thornport's History
Thornport started as an unincorporated village in 1839. This means it was a community without its own local government. A doctor named W. W. Talbott helped plan the village. His company built a special canal to connect Thorn Township to a large body of water. This water was called the Licking Summit Reservoir. Today, we know it as Buckeye Lake.
Dr. Talbott and his wife's family, the Hoshors, owned the land where Thornport was built. In the early 1800s, Thornport grew quickly. This was thanks to the busy canal trade. Farmers stored their grain in a big warehouse in Thornport. Travelers also stayed at a large hotel in the village.
However, a big storm in the mid-1800s caused a lot of damage. The canal trade slowed down. But then, a nearby railroad was built. This helped Thornport become busy again. People and goods traveled through the village by train. You can still see an old log cabin in Thornport today. It reminds us of the early pioneer days and the importance of the canal.
Thornport is one of three villages located right next to Buckeye Lake. This is why "port" is part of its name. The nearby village of Thornville was established later. It has many beautiful homes from the Victorian era.
