The Three Arts Club of Chicago was a special home and club in Chicago. It was created for young women who were studying the "three arts": music, painting, and drama. The club started in 1912, inspired by a similar club in New York.
Today, the building where the Three Arts Club once stood is owned by Restoration Hardware Chicago. This historic building was recognized as a Chicago Landmark on June 10, 1981.
History of the Club
The very first home for the Three Arts Club was at 1614 North LaSalle Street. It had a restaurant and enough rooms for sixteen women to live there.
In 1914, the club decided to build its own larger home. Famous architects Holabird & Roche designed the new building. It opened in 1915 at 1300 N. Dearborn Street. This new three-story building had 92 rooms for residents.
Over its history, more than 13,000 women lived at the Three Arts Club. It provided a place for women artists to live continuously until 2004. That year, the last residents moved out.
In 2007, the building was sold to developers. The money from the sale helped start a new non-profit organization called 3Arts. This new group continues to support artists today.
Why the Club Was Created
The Three Arts Club was formed to be a friendly and safe place for women studying arts in Chicago. It was a social center where they could live and connect with others who shared their passion for the arts.
