The Three Arts Club of Chicago was a special place in Chicago. It was a home and club for young women who studied music, painting, and drama. This beautiful building became a Chicago Landmark on June 10, 1981. The club started in 1912, inspired by a similar club in New York.
History of the Three Arts Club
The very first Three Arts Club home was at 1614 North LaSalle Street. It had a restaurant and rooms for sixteen women to live in.
In 1914, the club decided to build its own special home. The famous architects Holabird & Roche designed it. This new three-story building opened in 1915. It was located at 1300 N. Dearborn Street and had 92 rooms for residents.
Over its history, more than 13,000 women lived at the Three Arts Club. It offered a safe and friendly place for women artists to live and learn.
The club provided homes for women artists until 2004. That year, the last residents moved out. In 2007, the building was sold to developers. The money from the sale helped start a new non-profit group called 3Arts.
Today, the Three Arts Club building is owned by Restoration Hardware Chicago. It now has an art gallery and a restaurant called the Three Arts Café. You can find it at the same address, 1300 N. Dearborn Street. The building still has its original dining hall, kitchen, and the layout of the old dormitory floors.
