Thuroy, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thuroy is a small, quiet place in Ozark County, Missouri, in the United States. It's not a big city or town, but more like a tiny area where people live. Thuroy is located near a small stream that flows north into Barren Creek. It's also very close to the border between Missouri and Arkansas, and not far from Missouri State Highway 101.

The town of Bakersfield is about four miles northeast of Thuroy. Barren Creek, which is near Thuroy, eventually flows into Norfork Lake in Arkansas, about four miles to the southwest.

A Look Back: Thuroy's History

Thuroy once had its own post office! This post office opened in 1927. It helped people send and receive letters and packages. However, it didn't stay open for very long, closing its doors in 1936.

The name "Thuroy" comes from an early settler named Thursey Marshal. It seems there was a small mistake when the name was first written down for the post office, and it was spelled "Thuroy" instead of "Thursey." This spelling was never changed, and that's how the community got its unique name.
