A Glimpse into Ticul's Past

From Ancient Maya to Spanish Town

After the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, Ticul was rebuilt as a Spanish colonial town. This happened in the year 1549. The Spanish brought new ways of building and living to the area.

Becoming a City

Later, in 1847, Ticul was officially given the status of a city. This was done by the Republic of Yucatán. Being a city meant it was an important center for the region.

Language and Food

Over half of the people in Ticul still speak the Maya language as their first language. While Spanish is also understood, Maya is very important to their culture. When it comes to food, a popular local dish is poc-chuc. It's a delicious pork dish that many visitors enjoy trying.
