The Tigre Art Museum, once the Tigre Club.

The Tigre Club is a beautiful old building located right by the Luján River. You can find it in a place called Paseo Victorica in Tigre, which is a town close to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

This grand club was built next to the old Tigre Hotel, which isn't there anymore. A wealthy person named Ernesto Tornquist helped pay for it. The building was designed by architects Pablo Pater and Luis Dubois, along with engineer Emilio Mitre. Emilio was the son of a former President of Argentina, Bartolomé Mitre. The Tigre Club first opened its doors on January 13, 1912. Just like the hotel nearby, the Tigre Club quickly became a popular spot for rich and famous people to meet and socialize.

The building itself is very elegant and fancy. It has two main floors with extra smaller levels called mezzanines. There are large windows all around, letting in lots of light. Inside, the main room on the first floor has amazing paintings on the walls by a Spanish artist named Julio Vila y Prades. The stairs are made of marble, and you can see beautiful Venetian mirrors and French chandeliers, which are fancy hanging lights.

A Look Back: The Tigre Club's History

For a few years, from 1927 to 1933, the Tigre Club was home to a casino. However, a new law was passed that said casinos couldn't be so close to Buenos Aires. Because of this, the casino had to move to Mar del Plata.

After the casino closed and a big worldwide economic problem called the Great Depression happened, fewer people visited the club. The Tigre Hotel, which was next door, was torn down in 1940. Even though the club continued to operate as a restaurant with live shows, it never became as popular as it once was.

From Club to Museum: A New Chapter

In 1979, the Tigre Club was recognized as a very important building. It was declared a National Historic Monument. This means it's protected because of its history and beauty.

After a lot of work to fix it up and make it new again, the building reopened in 2006. It is now the Tigre Municipal Museum of Fine Art, also known as Museo de Arte Tigre. This museum has a large collection of art created by Argentine artists.
