History of Tilden
The area that is now the Town of Tilden was first mapped out in 1848. This was done by a team working for the U.S. government. They surveyed the land to create official maps.
In 1849, another team walked through the woods and swamps. They marked all the corners of land sections using chains and compasses. After their work, the surveyor described the area. He said the land was "high and rolling" and covered with aspen trees. He also noted that there were prairies in the valleys with sandy soil.
The surveyor also mentioned a farm owned by John Myers. This farm was on Section 22 and had about 7 acres. John Myers had grown good crops of oats, wheat, barley, potatoes, and buckwheat that season.
The Town of Tilden was officially created in 1882. It was formed from a part of the Town of Eagle Point. The town was named after Samuel J. Tilden. He was a well-known candidate for U.S. President in 1876.
