Tilford is a small community in Meade County, South Dakota, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. You can find Tilford right off Exit 40 on Interstate 90. It's about 9.2 miles (14.8 km) south of Sturgis, which is the main town in Meade County. Even though Tilford is small and doesn't have its own government, it still has its own special ZIP code: 57769.
History
Tilford was first planned out and marked on a map in 1888. This process is called "platting." The community got its name from Colonel Joseph G. Tilford. He was an important leader who commanded a place called Fort Meade. Also in 1888, a post office opened in Tilford. It stayed open for many years until it closed in 1958.
