Tiloun, whose real name was Jean-Michel Ramoune, was a talented singer from Réunion. He was born around 1967 and passed away on July 5, 2020. Tiloun was known for his unique music style.
Early Life and Music
When Tiloun was a child, he met many famous musicians from Réunion. Some of these included Alain Péters, Ziskakan, and Henri Madoré. From a young age, Tiloun loved Pei music. This type of music uses lots of percussion instruments and involves dancing.
Tiloun grew up in the Saint-Denis area. This place was full of creative people and musicians. These artists greatly inspired Tiloun and his own music.
His Unique Style
Tiloun often wrote and performed his songs in the Kabaré language. He started out as a street artist, playing music just for fun. Other well-known artists, like Gilbert Pounia and Danyèl Waro, encouraged him to share his music more widely. Eventually, his son, Nicolas, convinced him to record his songs for everyone to hear.
Tiloun cared deeply for his family and worked closely with other musicians from Réunion. His music blended different cultures. You could hear influences from Malagasy, African, and South American sounds in his songs. He even used floppy disks to record his music. This helped keep his work special and not too focused on making money.
In 2011, Tiloun released an album called Kas in Poz. He worked on this album with other Réunionese musicians.
Community Work
Tiloun was very active in his community. He worked to help preserve the Réunion Creole language. He also supported groups that researched diabetes. Tiloun also cared about how food was grown. He worked to find kinder ways of farming in Réunion.
Tiloun passed away on July 5, 2020, in Saint-Denis.
