Timothy Raines Jr. is a former professional baseball player from the United States. He was born on August 31, 1979. His dad, Tim Raines, is a famous baseball player who is in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Hall of Fame. Tim Jr. played as an outfielder. He played for the Baltimore Orioles team from 2001 to 2004. Like his father, Tim Jr. could hit the ball from both sides of the plate. This is called being a switch-hitter. He also threw the ball with his right hand.
During his three years playing in the major leagues, Raines Jr. had a batting average of .213. He had seven RBI (runs batted in) but did not hit any home runs. He played in 75 games in total.
Playing with His Dad
On October 4, 2001, something very special happened. Tim Raines Jr. was playing center field for the Orioles. His father, Tim Raines Sr., was playing left field for the same team! They were playing against the Boston Red Sox. The Orioles lost that game 5–4.
This was a rare event in baseball history. Tim Raines Jr. and Sr. became only the second father-son pair to play in the same Major League Baseball game. The first pair was Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr.. They played together for the Seattle Mariners on August 31, 1990.
Later Career and Coaching
After playing for the Orioles, Raines Jr. continued his baseball career.
- In 2006, he played for teams like the New Orleans Zephyrs and Harrisburg Senators.
- In 2009, he signed minor league contracts with the Chicago White Sox and then the Kansas City Royals.
- In 2011, Raines Jr. played for the Newark Bears. His father was the manager of this team. The Bears were part of the Can-Am League.
After his playing days, Tim Raines Jr. became a coach. In 2017, the Baltimore Orioles hired him. He became the hitting coach for their Short-Season A team, the Aberdeen IronBirds.
