The idea for this museum came from a smart lawyer and teacher named Juan Bautista Terán. In 1912, he started the National University of Tucumán. He wanted the museum to work with the university's School of Fine Arts. So, on June 18, 1916, the museum first opened its doors in the city of San Miguel de Tucumán. It was the first museum of its kind in the city!

A Museum on the Move

The museum became its own independent place in 1922. Then, in 1931, it moved to a bigger building. It moved again in 1957 to the old home of a former president, Nicolás Avellaneda. However, that building started to fall apart, so the museum had to close in 1997. Its art collections were kept safe at the provincial Secretariat of Culture for a while.

Later, an old bank building in Tucumán closed down. This building was special and became a National Historic Monument. This allowed the Secretariat of Culture to move the museum's growing art collection to this new, beautiful location. The museum officially reopened there on September 29, 2003.

Names of Honor

The museum has been renamed a few times to honor important local artists. In 1975, it was named after the famous sculptor Lola Mora. Then, in 1986, it was renamed again to honor a local painter and art teacher named Timoteo Navarro [es]. That's why it's called the Timoteo Navarro Museum today!

Inside the Museum Building

The museum is located in a stunning building that was designed in 1905 by an architect named Alberto Pelsmaekers. The building has a mix of styles, including baroque and French neoclassical designs.

The main hall inside the museum is huge! It's about 400 square meters (that's like a really big classroom). Most of the museum's art is shown here. The ceiling is two stories high and has a special skylight. This skylight is made of glass and iron and lets in lots of natural light, making the art look even better. It's held up by strong wrought-iron pillars.

What You Can See

The museum has a permanent collection of over 680 artworks. This is the most important collection of art in the Argentine Northwest region! You can see all sorts of art, including:

  • Paintings
  • Sketches
  • Lithographs (a type of printmaking)
  • Ceramics (like pottery)
  • Sculptures
  • Illustrated poems
