The Timoteo Navarro Museum of Art

The Timoteo Navarro Provincial Museum of Fine Arts is a very important art museum in Tucumán Province, Argentina. It shows many beautiful artworks.

About the Museum

The idea for this museum came from a smart lawyer and teacher named Juan Bautista Terán. In 1912, he started the National University of Tucumán. The museum was planned to work with the university's School of Fine Arts. On June 18, 1916, the museum first opened its doors in San Miguel de Tucumán. It was the first museum of its kind in the city.

Museum's Journey

In 1922, the museum became independent. Then, in 1931, it moved to a bigger building. It moved again in 1957 to the old home of former President Nicolás Avellaneda. But this building got old and unsafe, so the museum had to close in 1997. Its art pieces were kept safe at the provincial Secretariat of Culture for a while.

Later, a large bank building closed down. This building was named a National Historic Monument. This allowed the Secretariat of Culture to move the museum's growing art collection to this new, special place. The museum reopened there on September 29, 2003.

Names of the Museum

The museum has had a few names! In 1975, it was named after the famous local sculptor Lola Mora. Then, in 1986, it was renamed again. This time, it was named in honor of a local painter and art teacher named Timoteo Navarro [es]. This is the name it still has today.

The Museum Building

The museum is located in a beautiful building. It was designed in 1905 by a Belgian-Argentine architect, Alberto Pelsmaekers. The building mixes different styles, like Baroque and French neoclassical.

The main hall is a huge space, about 400 square meters (4,200 square feet). It has a very high ceiling, two stories tall, with a skylight at the top. This skylight is made of glass and iron, held up by strong wrought-iron pillars. It lets in lots of natural light.

Art Collections

The museum has a very important collection of art, especially for the Argentine Northwest region. It holds over 680 artworks! These include paintings, drawings, lithographs (a type of print), ceramics, sculptures, illustrated poems, and photographs.
