The Timothy Baldwin House is a special old house located at 186 Damascus Road in Branford, Connecticut. It was built around 1819. This house is a great example of Georgian Colonial architecture, which was a popular style back then. It belonged to an important local family called the Baldwins. In 1988, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's recognized as an important historical site.

What Does the Timothy Baldwin House Look Like?

The Timothy Baldwin House is in a neighborhood east of Branford's town center. It sits on the north side of Damascus Road.

How Was the House Built?

This house has two and a half stories and is made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a "side-gable roof." There's a chimney right in the middle of the house. The outside walls are covered with horizontal wooden boards called "clapboard."

A smaller, one-story part of the house, called an "ell," sticks out to the right. The front of the main house has five sections, or "bays," with windows placed evenly. The front door is in the middle. It has decorative columns, called "pilasters," on each side and a pointed design above it.

Who Lived in the Timothy Baldwin House?

The house was likely built around 1819. This was about the time Timothy Baldwin got married.

The Baldwin Family's History

Timothy's father, Zaccheus Baldwin, probably built the house. He gave Timothy about 18 acres (7.3 ha) of farmland when the house was built. The Baldwin family was one of the first families to settle in this part of Branford. This historic house stayed in the Baldwin family for a very long time, until 1913.
