What Does the House Look Like?
The Timothy Corey House No. 2 is in a part of Brookline called Corey Hill. You can find it on the south side of Washington Street, right where it meets Downing Street.
Building Materials and Shape
This house is 2-1/2 stories tall. This means it has two full floors and a half-floor, usually in the attic. It's built from fieldstone, which are natural stones found in fields. The roof has a gable shape, like an upside-down 'V'. The ends of the roof, also made of stone, look like triangles, which is called "pedimented." Two chimneys stick out from the roof.
Front of the House
The front of the house has five sections, or "bays." The main door is in the middle. A small porch, called a portico, covers the entrance. This portico was added in the 1900s.
History of the Timothy Corey House
This house was built in 1843 for a person named Deacon Timothy Corey. He was an important figure in the community.
Corey Family Connection
Interestingly, Timothy Corey had another house nearby. His first house is located at 808 Washington Street. The land where this house stands has been owned by the Corey family since the 1760s. People believe this house might even be built on the same spot where Timothy Corey's father's house once stood.
Why This House is Special
The Timothy Corey House No. 2 is unique because it's made of stone. In this area, most houses were built using other materials, so stone houses are quite rare. Its style is a simple version of the Greek Revival design. This style was very popular for buildings in the United States during the 1800s. It often used elements inspired by ancient Greek temples.
