Timothy Lionel DeFoor, born on November 18, 1961, is an American politician. He currently serves as the Pennsylvania Auditor General. Before this, he was the Controller for Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He made history as the first Black person elected to a state-level office in Pennsylvania.

DeFoor's win in the 2020 Pennsylvania Auditor General election was very important. It made him the first African American to win a statewide executive office in Pennsylvania. He was also the first Republican to hold the Auditor General office since 1997.

Education and Learning Journey

Before college, Tim DeFoor went to Susquehanna Township High School. He earned an associate degree in paralegal studies from Harrisburg Area Community College. He then got a bachelor's degree in psychology from Pennsylvania State University. He also earned another bachelor's degree in sociology and history from the University of Pittsburgh. Later, DeFoor completed a master's degree in project management at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

Tim DeFoor's Career Path

Early Work Experience

Tim DeFoor started his career in 1986. He worked as an investigator for the Dauphin County public defender's office. After that, he was an investigator for Pennsylvania's Office of the Inspector General. He also worked for the Pennsylvania Attorney General. Later, he became an internal auditor and fraud investigator for UPMC Health Plan. He also worked as a consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton.

Serving as County Controller

In 2015, DeFoor was elected as the Dauphin County Controller. He beat Eric Gutshall, who was the Democratic candidate. He was the first African American to win a county office in Dauphin County. His work as controller was recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association.

DeFoor was re-elected in 2019 without anyone running against him. After he was elected Auditor General, he resigned from his county controller job on December 21, 2020. Mary Bateman took over as controller in November 2021.

Becoming Auditor General

DeFoor announced he would run for 2020 Pennsylvania Auditor General election on December 19, 2019. The Republican State Committee of Pennsylvania supported him in January 2020. This led other Republican candidates to drop out of the race. In the main election, DeFoor ran against Dr. Nina Ahmad. On November 6, 2020, the Associated Press announced DeFoor had won.

DeFoor became Auditor General on January 19, 2021. He took over from Eugene DePasquale. In his first speech, DeFoor honored people like John Lewis. He said they helped make it possible for him to enter politics. He promised to look at all issues fairly, without taking sides. He also said he would keep skilled staff members from the previous Auditor General's team. One of his main goals was to check Governor Tom Wolf's COVID-19 business waiver program.
