Timothy Lionel DeFoor was born in 1961 or 1962. He is an American politician who serves as the 50th Auditor General of Pennsylvania. He started this important job in 2021. Before that, he was the controller for Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, from 2016 to 2021. He is a member of the Republican Party.
When Timothy DeFoor won the election for Auditor General in 2020, he made history. He became the first African American person to win a statewide executive office in Pennsylvania. He was also the first Republican to hold the Auditor General office since 1997.

Early Life and Education
Timothy DeFoor grew up in Pennsylvania. He went to Susquehanna Township High School. After high school, he continued his education at several colleges.
He earned an associate degree in paralegal studies from Harrisburg Area Community College. He then went to Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. He also earned another bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in sociology and history. Later, he earned a master's degree in project management from Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.
Career Journey
Starting His Career
Timothy DeFoor began his career in 1986. He worked as an investigator for the public defender's office in Dauphin County. He also worked as an investigator for the Pennsylvania Inspector General's office and the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office.
He gained experience as an internal auditor and fraud investigator for UPMC Health Plan. He also worked as a consultant for a company called Booz Allen Hamilton.
Serving as County Controller
In 2015, Timothy DeFoor was elected as the controller for Dauphin County. A county controller is like a chief financial officer for the county. They make sure that county money is spent correctly and wisely. He was the first African American person to win a county row office in Dauphin County.
His work as controller was recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association. He was re-elected in 2019 without anyone running against him. After being elected Auditor General, he resigned from his county controller role in January 2021.
Becoming Auditor General
Timothy DeFoor announced in December 2019 that he would run for Auditor General. The Auditor General is like the state's chief financial watchdog. This person checks how state money is spent and makes sure it's used properly.
He won the Republican primary election. In the main election, he ran against Nina Ahmad. On November 6, 2020, it was announced that DeFoor had won the election.
He officially became Auditor General on January 19, 2021. In his first speech, he talked about important figures like John Lewis. He promised to look at all issues fairly, without taking sides. He also said he would keep good staff members from the previous Auditor General's team. One of his main goals was to check how Governor Tom Wolf's COVID-19 business waiver program spent money.
In the 2024 Pennsylvania Auditor General election, Timothy DeFoor was re-elected for another term. He continues to serve the people of Pennsylvania by overseeing how state funds are used.
