Tina Barney's Early Life and Learning

Tina Barney was born Tina Isles. She was one of three children. Her father was Philip Henry Isles, and her mother was Lillian Fox. Lillian was a fashion model in the 1940s. Later, Tina's parents divorced. Her mother then married a writer named Stephane Groueff. Tina's great-grandfather was Emanuel Lehman. He helped start a big company called Lehman Brothers.

Tina's grandfather first showed her photography when she was a child. As a teenager, she studied Art History. She went to Spence School in Manhattan. When she was 19, she lived in Italy for a while. There, she learned even more about art.

How Tina Started Photography

Around 1971, Tina Barney began working with photography. She volunteered for the Junior Council of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She worked in the photography department. Her job was to organize photos for a show. This made her want to learn more. She started collecting photos and visiting art galleries. This helped her understand photography better.

In 1973, Tina moved to Sun Valley, Idaho. There, she started taking photography classes just for fun. From 1976 to 1979, she studied at the Sun Valley Center for Arts and Humanities. She also took special classes with famous photographers. Some of these included Duane Michals and Robert Cumming.
