The Tinlinn Apartments is an old apartment building located at 413 Garland Street in Flint, Michigan. It's a special building because it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. This means it's an important part of history and worth protecting!
A Look Back: History of Tinlinn Apartments
At the start of the 1900s, the city of Flint, Michigan was growing super fast! This was because the car industry was booming. From 1900 to 1910, Flint's population almost tripled. This growth continued for many years.
With so many new people, there weren't enough homes. This made the housing market very busy. In 1909, Nelson C. and Helen Webster bought the land for the apartments. Mr. Webster worked for a company that made parts for cars. The area where they bought the land was a fancy neighborhood. Many important business people lived there.
In 1911, the Websters built the Tinlinn Apartments. They wanted it to be a nice place for successful business people to live. The Websters themselves lived in the Tinlinn until at least 1916. Most of the first people who rented apartments there were leaders in the car industry.
In 1919, John C. Berridge bought the Tinlinn. He owned the Flint Drug Company. He also moved into the building. Later, in 1928, Mr. Berridge opened the Berridge Hotel right next door. The Tinlinn continued to be a four-apartment building until 1999, when it closed. About ten years later, it was fixed up and reopened. This happened as part of the same project that fixed up the Berridge Hotel.
What Does Tinlinn Apartments Look Like?
The Tinlinn Apartments is a two-story building. It is made of brick and stucco. It has a style called Arts and Crafts. The building has four apartments, with two on each floor.
The building sits on a raised foundation. It has a roof that slopes down on all sides. This roof has wide edges that hang over the building. The bottom part of the building and the first floor are covered with brick. The corners have special brick details. The second story is covered with stucco, which is a type of plaster.
In the middle of the front of the building, there is a two-story porch. This porch is wide enough for three sections. The bottom part of the porch and its first-floor railing match the brick of the building. There are four round columns that go up to the roof. The second floor of the porch has a wooden railing between these columns.
The porch covers the main entrance. The front door is made of wood and has windows on each side. There are two sets of double-hung windows on each side of the door. On the second floor, there are double-hung windows in the middle section. There is also a wooden door and a double-hung window on each side. A wide dormer, which is a window that sticks out from the roof, is in the center of the front roof.
