A Look Back in Time
Tiruvannamalai district is known as a very special and holy place in Tamil Nadu. The district gets its name from its main town. The word "annamalai" in Tiruvannamalai means "the mountain that cannot be reached." The word "Tiru" is a respectful title, like saying "holy" or "great."
The town of Tiruvannamalai has a very old temple. It is one of India's most ancient heritage sites. This town is a major center for the Saiva religion, which worships the god Shiva. A big festival called Deepam is held here. Many people from all over South India come to celebrate this festival.
After India became independent, Tiruvannamalai was part of a larger area called North Arcot District. In October 1989, the North Arcot District was divided. This created two new districts: Vellore District and Tiruvannamalai District.
