Tissue (disambiguation) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tissue is a word that can mean a few different things, so it's important to know which kind of tissue we are talking about!

What is Biological Tissue?

In biology, a tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to do a specific job in a living thing. Think of cells as tiny building blocks. When many of the same kind of building blocks are put together, they form a tissue. Tissues then combine to form organs, like your heart or your brain.

For example, your muscles are made of muscle tissue. This tissue is made up of many muscle cells that all work together to help you move.

Main Types of Tissues in Your Body

Your body has four main types of biological tissues:

  • Epithelial tissue: This tissue covers the surfaces of your body and lines your organs. Your skin is a great example of epithelial tissue. It protects you and helps you feel things.
  • Connective tissue: This tissue supports, connects, or separates different types of tissues and organs. Bones, blood, and fat are all types of connective tissue. They help hold your body together and transport things.
  • Muscle tissue: This tissue is responsible for movement. There are three kinds:
    • Skeletal muscle (moves your bones)
    • Smooth muscle (found in your organs like your stomach)
    • Cardiac muscle (found only in your heart)
  • Nervous tissue: This tissue makes up your brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It sends electrical signals around your body, allowing you to think, feel, and react.

What is Paper Tissue?

Paper tissue is a type of very thin, soft paper. It's designed to be absorbent, meaning it can soak up liquids. You use paper tissue for many everyday tasks.

Different Kinds of Paper Tissue

You probably use different kinds of paper tissue all the time:

  • Facial tissue: This is the soft, thin paper you use to wipe your nose or eyes. It often comes in boxes.
  • Toilet paper: This is a type of paper tissue used for hygiene in bathrooms.
  • Paper towels: These are stronger and more absorbent paper tissues used for cleaning up spills in the kitchen or around the house.
  • Wrapping tissue: This is a very thin, decorative paper often used to wrap gifts or protect delicate items.
