Tizoc (also known as Tizocic or Tizocicatzin) was an important Aztec ruler. He was the seventh tlatoani (ruler) of Tenochtitlan, the capital city of the Aztec Empire. His name means "He who makes sacrifices" or "He who does penance."
Tizoc or his brother Ahuitzotl was the first to use the title Huey Tlatoani. This title meant "supreme ruler." It was used to show their power over other cities in the Aztec Triple Alliance.
Tizoc's Life and Rule
Family Background
Tizoc was born into the Aztec royal family. His mother was Princess Atotoztli II, and his father was Prince Tezozomoc. He was also the grandson of two important emperors, Moctezuma I and Itzcoatl.
Tizoc followed his older brother, Axayacatl, as ruler. After Tizoc, his younger brother, Ahuitzotl, became the next tlatoani. Tizoc was also the uncle of famous emperors like Moctezuma II and Cuitláhuac.
His Time as Ruler
Most historical records show that Tizoc became the ruler in 1481. This was the Aztec year "2 House." Even though his rule was quite short, he started some big projects.
One of his main projects was rebuilding the Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlan. This huge task was later finished by his younger brother in 1487. Tizoc also had to deal with a rebellion. He successfully put down a revolt by the Matlatzincan people in the Toluca Valley.
During Tizoc's reign, the Aztec Empire expanded. According to the Codex Mendoza, he conquered several new towns and areas. These conquests helped make the Aztec Empire even larger and more powerful.
How Tizoc Died
Tizoc died in 1486. The exact reason for his death is not fully clear. Some historical sources suggest that he might have been poisoned. Other sources believe he died because of an illness.
