Who Was Tobias Jenkins?
Tobias Jenkins was born in 1660. His father was Colonel Tobias Jenkins, and his mother was Antonyna Wickham. Tobias came from a family that was already involved in politics. His grandfather, Sir Henry Jenkins, was also an MP for a place called Boroughbridge.
In 1695, Tobias became a "freeman" of the city of York. This was an important title that gave him special rights in the city. Soon after, he was elected as an MP for York.
His Time in Parliament

In 1701, Tobias did not run for MP in the first election of that year. This was because he had been chosen as the Lord Mayor of York. The Lord Mayor is a very important leader in the city. He did run in the second election of 1701 and won.
He decided not to run for MP in 1705. Instead, his nephew, Robert Benson, took his place. Tobias tried to become an MP again in 1713 but was not successful. However, he won the election in 1715 and served in Parliament once more.
