Tocancipá is a town and municipality in Colombia. It is located in the department of Cundinamarca, which is a part of the Central Savanna Province. This area is in the northern part of the Bogotá savanna.
The town sits high up in the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes mountains. Its center is about 2,605 meters (8,547 feet) above sea level. Tocancipá is also close to Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. It is about 42 kilometers (26 miles) south of Bogotá.

What Does Tocancipá Mean?
The name Tocancipá comes from the Muysccubun language. This was the language spoken by the Muisca people. In their language, Tocancipá means "Valley of the joys of the zipa". A zipa was an important leader among the Muisca.
A Look Back in Time: Tocancipá's History
The area where Tocancipá is located has been home to people for a very long time. An archaeological site called Tibitó is found within Tocancipá's borders. Scientists have found proof that people lived here over 11,700 years ago.
When Spanish conquistadores arrived in 1537, the Muisca people lived here. Tocancipá was part of the Muisca Confederation. This was a group of different Muisca leaders who worked together. The zipa of Bacatá was the ruler who oversaw Tocancipá.
The modern town of Tocancipá was officially started on September 21, 1593. It was founded by a person named Miguel de Ibarra.
