The Tokyo Sky Tree (東京スカイツリー, Tōkyō Sukai Tsurī), once known as New Tokyo Tower (新東京タワー, Shin Tōkyō Tawā), is a very tall tower in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan. It is used for sending out TV and radio signals. It also has restaurants and amazing places where you can look out over the city. You can find it close to the Oshiage train station.

Japan's Tallest Tower

The Tokyo Sky Tree is the tallest building in all of Japan. It stands at a height of 634 m (2,080 ft). This specific height was chosen for a cool reason! The numbers 6, 3, and 4 sound like "mu," "sa," and "shi" in Japanese. This is a special way to remember "Musashi Province," which is an old name for the area where the tower stands today.

World's Second Tallest Structure

The Tokyo Sky Tree is the second tallest structure in the world. Only the Burj Khalifa in Dubai is taller. The Burj Khalifa is about 829.84 meters (2,723 feet) tall.

Amazing Views and Lights

You can see all of central Tokyo from special viewing platforms inside the tower. These platforms are located at 350 m (1,150 ft) and 450 m (1,480 ft) high. At night, the Tokyo Sky Tree lights up with many different colors. It looks beautiful against the night sky.

Building the Tokyo Sky Tree

The work to build this huge tower started in 2008. It took several years to complete. The building was finished on February 29, 2012.

Opening Day Preparations

Before the tower officially opened, Emperor Akihito visited it. This was a special visit before the public could come inside. The official opening parties were planned for May 22, 2012.
