Playing for Clubs
Early Career and Sparta Prague
Tomáš Skuhravý started his football journey at a young age. He made his first appearance for Sparta Prague on September 28, 1983. This was in an important match against Real Madrid during the 1983–84 UEFA Cup. He came into the game as a substitute, showing his talent early on.
Success with Genoa
In 1986, Skuhravý moved to Italy to play for Serie A club Genoa. There, he became a key player and formed a fantastic team-up with Uruguayan player Carlos Aguilera. Tomáš was tall and strong, often playing his best later in the season. Aguilera was smaller and faster, shining in earlier matches. Together, they made Genoa's attack very strong all year long.
In the 1990–91 season, Skuhravý and Aguilera scored 15 goals together. This helped Genoa finish in fourth place in the league, which was a great result for the team. Skuhravý also helped Genoa reach the semi-finals of the 1991–92 UEFA Cup. He scored a total of 57 goals for Genoa, making him the club's top goalscorer in the Serie A.
Later Career and Retirement
After his successful time at Genoa, Skuhravý joined the Portuguese club Sporting CP in 1995. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury there. This injury kept him from playing for a long time. He decided to stop playing football at the age of 32 because of his health issues.
Playing for His Country
Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic
Tomáš Skuhravý played for his home country on the international stage. He represented both Czechoslovakia and, later, the newly formed Czech Republic. Overall, he played 49 international matches and scored 17 goals. He played 43 matches for Czechoslovakia, scoring 14 goals. For the Czech Republic, he played 6 matches and scored 3 goals.
1990 FIFA World Cup Hero
Skuhravý made his debut for Czechoslovakia in 1985 in a friendly match against Poland. His most famous moments came during the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He scored five goals in this tournament, making him the second-highest scorer overall.
His goals included the first goal against the United States. He also scored an amazing hat-trick (three goals in one game) against Costa Rica. What made this even more special was that all three goals were scored with his head! This was the first time in World Cup history that a player scored a hat-trick using only headers.
Life After Football
After retiring from playing, Tomáš Skuhravý has stayed busy. He has been married twice and has two daughters. One of his daughters, Michaela Skuhravá, is a fashion designer. Today, Tomáš lives in Celle Ligure, Italy. He owns a restaurant there and also works as a football expert for a local TV channel. His cousin, Roman Skuhravý, is also involved in football as a coach. In 2018, Tomáš briefly returned to football as a coach for an Italian club called Cuneo, but he left in 2019 due to the club's financial problems.
