Tomás Segovia (born May 21, 1927 – died November 7, 2011) was a Mexican author, translator, and poet. He was born in Valencia, Spain. He studied in France and Morocco. Because of the Spanish Civil War, he moved to Mexico. There, he taught at the Colegio de México and other universities.

Segovia started a publication called Presencia in 1946. He also directed La Revista Mexicana de Literatura from 1958 to 1963. He worked with the magazine Plural and contributed to Vuelta. He was married to the writer Inés Arredondo from 1953 to 1965. At the time of his death, he was living in Madrid, Spain.

His Writings

Tomás Segovia was known for his poetry, but he also wrote literary criticism and translated many books. Some of his important poetry books include La luz provisional (1950), El sol y su eco (1960), and Anagnórisis (1967). He also wrote prose works like Contracorrientes (1973) and Poética y profética (1986).

Awards and Honors

Segovia received several important awards for his work:

  • He won the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize in 1972.
  • He received the Juan Rulfo Prize in 2005.
  • He was given the García Lorca International Poetry Prize [es] in 2008.

To honor Tomás Segovia, the National Council for Culture and Arts (Conaculta) created the Tomás Segovia Literary Translation Prize in August 2012. This award gives US$100,000 for the best translation either into Spanish or from Spanish, given every other year.

Film Based on His Work

  • La primera segunda matriz (1972) is a short film made by Mexican filmmaker Alfredo Gurrola. This film was based on a poem by Tomás Segovia with the same name. The film features narration by Juan José Gurrola. It also includes images from the Avándaro festival and music by famous composers like Ligeti, Stockhausen, and Luigi Nono.
