The Tombstone Historic District is a special area in Tombstone, Arizona. It's famous because it shows what life was like in the Wild West. This district tells the story of how towns tried to bring order to a wild frontier. It also shows how towns grew super fast because of mining, then slowed down when the mines closed.
Inside this historic area, you'll find the famous O.K. Corral. This spot is linked to the legendary Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. That famous shootout actually happened on Fremont Street, close to the back of the O.K. Corral, on October 26, 1881. Because of its important history, the district was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
Exploring Tombstone's Historic District
The Tombstone Historic District covers about 42 acres (17 hectares) in downtown Tombstone. It's like stepping back in time to the 1880s. The old Cochise County Courthouse is a key building in this area. It's now part of the Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park.
Buildings from the Mining Boom
Many buildings in the district look just like they did during the town's big mining boom in the 1880s. Even though mining started in the 1870s, two big fires in 1881 and 1882 destroyed most of the town's main street.
After these fires, new buildings went up quickly. Some important ones include the City Hall, built in 1882. There's also Schieffelin Hall, a huge performance hall made of adobe bricks, built in 1881. Another famous spot is the Bird Cage Theatre, a theater and playhouse also built in 1881. These buildings help us imagine what life was like in this exciting Wild West town.
